- Please be on the lookout for any dead cicadas or their skins after they've molted and bring them along to look at under magnifying lenses! -
Come and join us exploring nature together! The noisy buzz of cicadas is the sound of summer.
We'll be heading to the beautiful waterhole at the end of Brodies Rd in Mount Charlton, near Calen, to chat about these special insects and enjoy a swim and picnic together.
We will have a short talk about cicadas - their interesting life cycle, what they eat, their body and wing structure. We will examine some cicadas under magnifying glasses to take a closer look.
We will be doing some nature journaling together - where we draw or write about what we saw. We encourage parents to get a nature journal as well and learn alongside your children.
Afterwards, we enjoy snacks together and have time to swim and play. Stay for as long as you like, or head off to after school sports and activities.
What to bring:
Sunhat, sunscreen
Bottle of water
Snacks
Nature journal (A5 blank page book)
Pencil
Optional:
Magnifying glass
Watercolour pencils or paint
Small paintbrush
Please take a look through our community values and chat with your children about these before the walk.
Parents are responsible for the safety of their own children, and need to be present with their children during this activity.
To get there, head North on the Bruce Highway toward Calen (plugging 'Ballantyne Strawberry Farm' into google maps will get you close). At Calen, turn left onto the Calen Mount Charlton Rd and continue for a number of kilometres. Once you are at the Wintermoon Festival site, the road will fork just before the creek crossing - take the right form, past Ballantyne's Strawberry farm, and continue through the gate onto private property. Please be respectful of the farm as you drive through. Continue to the end of the road and park. After heavy rains, the farmer closes his gate to prevent damage to the dirt road - if this happens we will walk the 1km road to the waterhole.
Nature walks are usually held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month, except during school holidays. They follow a pattern of a short presentation, walk to observe nature, journaling, and then snacks and free play. This is part of our series this year on insects.
